General Omar N. Bradley Chair of Strategic Leadership
The United States Army War College and Dickinson College have jointly established the General Omar N. Bradley Chair of Strategic Leadership. The Chair will promote the study of leadership in the context of security and strategy and from the perspective of the liberal arts and sciences. This joint Chair is a logical product of the unique and mutually beneficial relationship the Colleges enjoy as neighboring institutions of higher education.
Funding is provided by Dickinson College and through the Army War College Foundation, Inc. The major donation through the AWCF is generously provided by Mutual of America in honor of William J. Flynn, Chairman of the Board.
Those appointed to the Chair will be recognized authorities and specialists on leadership issues drawn from the military, government, academic, business, and nonprofit sectors. They will teach, write, and take part in public conferences and panels, advancing the understanding of leadership in the community and the nation. Both Colleges will benefit from the different perspectives each partner brings to the subject.
FRANCIS W. DE SERIO CHAIR OF STRATEGIC AND THEATER INTELLIGENCE (begins January 2008)
The De Serio Chair will provide the incumbent with opportunities to expand and exchange knowledge with students, faculty, the National Intelligence Community, and Unified Command intelligence organizations on the critical role of intelligence in the formulation of national and theater security and strategy, and to enhance public understanding of the vital contributions of strategic intelligence to national security affairs
ACADEMIC CHAIRS
The USAWC Academic Chairs provide a prestigious and visible means of recognizing and honoring faculty members. These chairs are awarded as honorific recognition of a faculty member's significant contributions to the War College mission or are assigned to a faculty member filling an endowed position or other position-specific relationship. There are a total of 15 Academic Chairs. Thirteen are honorific and are divided between six dedicated to the Departments/Directorates and seven at-large chairs, which may be awarded to any faculty member. The remaining two academic chairs are position specific. All civilian and military faculty are eligible for nomination to an honorific Academic Chair. AWCF recognizes the faculty member's academic excellence by presenting an armchair as a symbol of their achievement.
NATIONAL SECURITY SEMINAR (NSS)
The Department of National Security and Strategy develops and conducts instruction focused on national security and national military strategy. It draws on the academic disciplines of international relations, politics, economics, regional studies, history, and national and international security studies to prepare students for senior positions in the national security establishment.
AWCF supports the National Security Seminar by underwriting the guest speakers and offsets costs for students, guests, and faculty who participate in this yearly event. The annual National Security Seminar occurs during the first full week of June, immediately preceding graduation, and serves as the capstone event of the academic year. This event provides a forum in which distinguished speakers may discuss their views on issues of importance to the nation's security and welfare with the students, International Fellows, and faculty of the Army War College and invited guests from across the country. It provides an extended opportunity for a free and candid dialogue on these issues among the College students, faculty and invited guests. And finally, it enables representative American citizens to get to know some of the prospective leaders of the American Armed Forces and government and, in turn, permits the students to better understand the society they serve.
PARAMETERS
Parameters is a refereed journal of ideas and issues. It provides a forum for mature thought on the art and science of land warfare, joint and combined matters, national and international security affairs, military strategy, military leadership and management, military history, ethics, and other topics of significant and current interest to the U.S. Army and the Department of Defense. It serves as a vehicle for continuing the education and professional development of graduates of the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) and other senior military officers, as well as members of government and academia concerned with national security affairs. AWCF supports this program with a small stipend for authors.
DEPARTMENT OF DISTANCE EDUCATION (DDE)
Department of Distance Education (DDE) offers a curriculum designed to prepare graduates to: Distinguish the uniqueness of strategic level leadership; manage change by applying resources to the processes for translating strategy into force requirements and capabilities; in concert with other elements of national power, advise on the role of the military in national security strategy formulations; analyze threats and other factors that affect U.S. interests; apply strategic thought to U.S. national security decision making processes; develop theater strategies, estimates, and campaign plans to employ unified, joint, and multinational forces; synthesize critical elements of warfare at the strategic and operational levels. AWCF provides honoraria for visiting lecturers.
CHAPLAIN (COL) & MARTHA MOORE MILITARY ETHICAL LEADERSHIP LECTURE
The Chaplain (COL) Sonny & Martha Moore Military Ethical Leadership Lecture Series is the Foundation's first endowed lecture. This was made possible by Mr. & Mrs. Russell T. Bundy. The lecture honors Chaplain and Mrs. Moore for their contributions to the USAWC, as members of the Class of 2001, and as the former Chief Protestant Chaplain at Carlisle Barracks. This annual lecture will be presented to the USAWC class and will discuss and examine issues related to ethical leadership of interest to both the civilian and military communities.
COL RONALD A. ROBERGE LECTURE
The COL Ronald A. Roberge Memorial Lecture is given in honor of the late Colonel Roberge of the USAWC faculty and USMA Class of '51. The Roberge Lecture is given annually in September as the first lecture of the year at the Military History Institute's "Perspectives in Military History Lecture Series."
ANTON MYRER LEADERSHIP DAY
Established with a gift from Mrs. Anton Myrer in honor of her husband, the author of the classic military novel ONCE AN EAGLE, the day focuses attention on leadership issues at the strategic level. It provides a unique exchange for academics, military and corporate leaders, journalists, and other invited guests to engage in lively dialogue and to learn from each other how better to practice the complex art of strategic leadership.
ARMY PHYSICAL FITNESS RESEARCH INSTITUTE (APFRI)
In 1982, the Surgeon General of the U.S. Army directed the establishment of the Army Physical Fitness Research Institute (APFRI) on the grounds of the USAWC in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Its mission was to develop a comprehensive health and fitness program designed to fit the needs of senior middle-aged officers. A key focus was reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Over the years, the APFRI staff designed programs for stopping smoking, lowering blood pressure, cutting down on dietary sugar, fat, and cholesterol, managing stress, and improving body flexibility, strength, and aerobic fitness. AWCF primarily supports APFRI by providing honoraria for Women's Health Symposium and Health Day.
STUDENT WRITING AWARDS
As many as twelve monetary awards for both the Resident Class and Distance Education Class are available to those who reach a high level of excellence. Papers are judged by the faculty Academic Chair Holders, the premier educators at the College.
COL JOHN J. MADIGAN III FACULTY AND STAFF PUBLISHED WRITING COMPETITION
The College presents as many as six awards for writing excellence for outstanding published articles written by members of the faculty. The College also gives an award for authorship of a book when one meets the stringent criteria for such recognition. These awards are judged by the Academic Chair Holders of the College. COL John Madigan was the editor of Paramaters from 1993-1999.
LANDPOWER ESSAY CONTEST
The goal of the USAWC Strategic Landpower Essay Contest is to stimulate critical and original thinking on the strategic role of landpower in modern warfare not only between the students and faculty at Carlisle Barracks, but also throughout the U.S. Army and the Nation. Topics must be related to "the advancement of professional landpower in joint and multinational operations". Through funding made available by the AWC Foundation, the USAWC has established the Strategic Landpower Essay Contest. Selection is made by the Commandant based on the recommendation of the Dean of Academic Affairs. Authors may, but need not, have an affiliation with the USAWC. They may be citizens of any country and may be military or civilian.
EXECUTIVE PUBLIC SPEAKING AWARD
The AWC Foundation recognizes excellence in oral presentation by presenting the Executive Public Speaking Award to the winner of the annual speech competition. All students participating in the Executive Public Speaking elective are eligible to compete for the speaking award. The awards program enables the College to recognize outstanding contributions by USAWC students and Senior Service College Fellows.
COL DON AND ANNE BUSSEY MILITARY INTELLIGENCE WRITING AWARD
The Colonel Don and Mrs. Anne Bussey Military Intelligence Writing Award is presented to the student writing the most distinguished essay on the employment of military intelligence in support of national military strategy. This annual award on this important subject is underwritten through the generosity of a former faculty member and his wife, the late Colonel (AUS) and Mrs. Don Bussey.
INTERNATIONAL FELLOWS PROGRAM (IFP)
Each year approximately 40 senior military officers from different countries are extended an invitation from the Chief of Staff of the United States Army to attend the U.S. Army War College. The academic year is full of studying, research, and fellowship as these officers are exposed to and instructed in areas ranging from military concepts and doctrine to national and theater level strategies. AWCF is pleased to help support the International Fellows Program. These funds make it possible for the family members of the International Officers to attend: English-as-a-Second-Language classes (ESL), trips to Washington, DC , Lancaster County , Hershey Amusement Park , and Philadelphia, PA. Without the support of the Army War College Foundation these programs would not be available for the International families to enjoy and experience our culture.
STRATEGIC LEADER STAFF RIDE
The Strategic Leader Staff Ride (two-day seminar) includes a one-day "staff ride" of the Gettysburg battlefield followed by a half-day of discussion on strategy and related topics at the Army War College . The concept of a staff ride originated in the Army in the 1880's and was used to teach various aspects of tactics and leadership to aspiring staff officers. Visiting a Civil War battlefield (originally on horseback, thus the term "staff ride") brought to life the importance of terrain, the interaction of battlefield commanders, tactics, leadership techniques, and command decisions.
SSI CONFERENCES
The Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) is the U.S. Army's institute for geo-strategic and national security research and analysis. SSI conducts strategic research and analysis to support the U.S. Army War College curricula, provides direct analysis for Army and Department of Defense leadership, and serves as a bridge to the wider strategic community. SSI is composed of civilian research professors, uniformed military officers, and a professional support staff. All have extensive credentials and experience. SSI is divided into three components: the Art of War Department focuses on global, trans-regional, and functional issues, particularly those dealing with Army transformation; the Regional Strategy and Planning Department focuses on regional strategic issues; and the Academic Engagement Program creates and sustains partnerships with the global strategic community. In addition to its organic resources, SSI has a web of partnerships with strategic analysts around the world, including the foremost thinkers in the field of security and military strategy.
SSI co-sponsors academic conferences to examine issues of importance to the Army, collaborating with some of the most prestigious universities in the country. Recent partners included Georgetown, Princeton, Harvard, MIT, Columbia, University of Chicago, University of Miami, Stanford, Georgia Tech, and Johns Hopkins.
The AWCF provides funds for the Strategy Conference held annually in April at the War College.
